Description

We are delighted to welcome Dr Stephanie L. Carey, Associate Research Professor from the University of South Florida, to give a talk on 'Quantifying Human Movement: For Assistive Technology, Rehabilitation, Injury Prevention and Optimal Performance' at 11.00am on 21 May 2026.

Abstract

This presentation will give an overview of the role of quantifying movement to inform assistive technology design, injury prevention, and performance optimization across diverse populations.

Projects using objective biomechanical outcomes to inform the evaluation of a novel prosthetic foot, characterize orthotic use in real-world settings, guide injury prevention strategies for performing artists and military personnel, and advance the development of exercise countermeasures for astronauts in extreme environments will be described. By quantifying human movement in various ways, technologies and interventions can be designed that not only restore function, but enhance resilience, independence, and performance in challenging environments.

Short Bio

Dr Stephanie L. Carey is an Associate Research Professor at the University of South Florida (USF), College of Engineering, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. She is the research coordinator for the Center for Assistive, Rehabilitation & Robotics Technologies (CARRT), which integrates research, education, and service to improve quality of life. She recently founded USF’s Aerospace: Science, Technology, Research and Applications (ASTRA) Center and interdisciplinary research and innovation consortium to advance human exploration, enhance health, optimize resource sustainability, and develop cutting-edge technologies benefiting both space missions and life on Earth. Her research includes gait analysis, applied biomechanics, prosthetic and orthotic function, design and testing of assistive technologies, injury prevention for performing artists and military personnel and exercise systems for astronauts. She teaches Bioastronautics, Rehabilitation Engineering, and Senior Capstone Design. Dr Carey has been funded by NSF, US Dept. of Defense and Veterans Affairs and was a summer faculty fellow at the Naval Health Research Center. Stephanie received the Cardiff University Scholar Award sponsored by the US-UK Fulbright Commission. At Cardiff University, Stephanie is collaborating with the School of Engineering, the School of Healthcare Sciences and the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Research Facility in biomechanics research and mentoring student design projects.
