Dr. Jon Stammers is a researcher and leader at the University of Sheffield, specialising in the intersection of advanced manufacturing and digital intelligence. With a background in Electronic Engineering (MEng and PhD), his career at the University has focused on the practical application of data and machine learning to solve complex industrial challenges.
Role at the AMRC
Since joining the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in 2013, Jon has been a driving force behind the centre’s digital transformation initiatives. He currently serves as the Senior Theme Lead for Data, Connectivity and AI within the Integrated Manufacturing Group. Based at Factory 2050, he oversees the development of "Smart Factory" technologies, including:
- Establishing open-source architectures for industrial data collection.
- Advancing computer vision and data visualization for the shop floor.
- Integrating data science and security into connected manufacturing processes.
Role in the CMI
In 2025, Jon was appointed as the Joint Theme Lead in AI for Engineering and Manufacturing for the University’s Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI). In this capacity, he acts as a bridge between fundamental AI research and its real-world application in manufacturing. He is a frequent contributor to CMI events and strives to make AI a practical, day-to-day tool for the UK manufacturing sector.
- Research Interests
Jon’s research is dedicated to the lifecycle of industrial data, from initial capture to actionable insights. His primary interests include:
- Sensor Fusion & Process Monitoring: Developing methods to verify machine tool health and process stability using machine learning.
- AI Implementation: Understanding the social and technical impacts of introducing new technology into manufacturing environments.
- Data Foundations and Sharing: Pushing forward an agenda to ensure organisations build analytics and AI pipelines on solid data foundations, and seeking opportunities to create and share curated datasets.
Dr. Stammers is also a Member of the IET and active on the committee of the IET Manufacturing Technical Network, where he arranges and hosts webinars, and contributes to national manufacturing thought leadership pieces.
