Three students from the School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations attended the 2026 British International Studies Association (BISA) Model NATO. Over 30 universities from across the UK, Canada and France participated in the event, run in partnership with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

BISAs annual flagship event provides a unique experience for students to actively take part in a simulation that teaches how NATO works in practice and the significance of the Alliance for UK and European defence. This year, the model commenced with a crisis alert that involved students negotiating and planning between the North Atlantic Council committee and the Military Committee to formulate and agree a joined-up crisis response.

Students were given a set of briefing materials on national capabilities and politics, alongside basic information on NATO’s mission and organisation. Academic specialists and professionals from the FCDO and MOD operated as the ‘home government’ by issuing instructions if needed and providing advice when requested.

Cerys, one of our participants has this to say: “The event was amazing! It was interesting to explore the practicalities of the inner workings of the organisation and just how much negotiation is involved in decision making. As a student hoping to enter a career in international relations, the opportunity to network with foreign office staff was invaluable.”

The model closed with a plenary session dedicated to the presentation of certificates of participation and delegate awards. We were thrilled to see our own student, Jess, be presented with this year’s Outstanding Delegate Award in the North Atlantic Council.

“It was an immense privilege and incredible opportunity to attend the BISA Model NATO summit - being able to see first-hand how alliances work and the importance of collaboration was really impactful, and has contributed to the approach I take towards my degree!” Jess commented. “The FCDO was a beautiful and inspiring setting, and these events are crucial in facilitating the next generation of diplomacy.”

These events offer invaluable opportunities for our students to build meaningful connections with FCDO and MOD officials. We actively champion networking at Sheffield, ensuring our students can access the professional mentorship and guidance necessary to navigate their future careers.

We are very proud of all our students who attended the Model NATO this year and we look forward to the next event.
