Why Spanish?

With official status in 20 countries, Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world. It is the major language in Latin America, alongside Portuguese, and is also an increasingly important language in the USA.

About the modules

Our Spanish modules are open to all students (for credits or not), members of staff, and members of the public.

Available on an academic year or semester basis, the modules aim to develop language competence and cultural knowledge for professional and recreational purposes through small group weekly classes and guided independent learning.

Levels

If you are unsure about your level, let us know when applying and we will invite you for a short interview to understand your previous experience and current needs.

Beginner

Choose this level if you are a complete beginner, have learnt some vocabulary with Duolingo, or studied the language during secondary school (pre-GCSE) but have not engaged with the language since then.

• Autumn: LAS155 Spanish Beginner 1 (10 credits)
• Spring:
  • LAS155 Spanish Beginner 1 (Repeat of Autumn module) (10 credits)
  • LAS1101 Spanish Beginner 2 (Continuation of LAS155) (10 credits)

Post-Beginner

Choose this level if you have a recent GCSE grade 6 or below or a higher GCSE grade from over five years ago.

• Autumn: LAS166 Spanish Post-Beginner 1 (10 credits)
• Spring: LAS193 Spanish Post-Beginner 2 (10 credits)

Intermediate

Choose this level if you have successfully completed Beginner or Post-Beginner, have a GCSE grades 7-9, an equivalent qualification, or can demonstrate equivalent competence.

• Spring: LAS286 Spanish Intermediate 2 (10 credits)

Higher Intermediate

Choose this level if you have successfully completed Intermediate, an AS level Grades A-C, an A level below Grade C, an equivalent qualification, or can demonstrate equivalent competence.

Advanced

Choose this level if you have successfully completed Higher Intermediate, an A level grade A-C, an equivalent qualification, or can demonstrate equivalent competence.

Higher Advanced

Choose this level if you have successfully completed Advanced or can demonstrate equivalent competence.

Proficient
